Abstract

Rationality is something that is often underestimated towards women. The reason is this is based on people’s thinking that is gender-biased, that men are more capable to think (using their heads) than women. This causes domestication of women when women are less valued in public sphere. In Enola Holmes (2020) movie, women’s rationality is represented as a form of resistance to fight any discrimination and also the oppression they receive. Film as a medium has a role to transmit or break ideas or ideologies, especially when those are related with justice or equality. The research entitled “Representation of Women Rationality in Enola Holmes (2020) Film” aims to describe women’s rationality and dominant ideology in the text with the help of feminist standpoint theory which helps show forms of women’s resistance as they are subordinates in society. This study uses a qualitative approach with the help of media text analysis methods, specifically John Fiske’s semiotic model that divides analysis into three levels: the level of reality, level of representation, and also level of ideology.
The result of the research shows that there is actualization form of women’s rationality against masculine rationality. At the level of reality, Enola is described as a figure who dares to go against patriarchal rules which can be identified by her confidence and serious facial expressions, especially when she is thinking or having an opinion about something. This aspect is also supported by the behavior of Enola, Edith, and Eudoria, regarding their reluctance to follow dressing codes that restricts women. At the same time, it also shows a form of oppression towards women over the power of men. This analysis is also supported by technical aspects at the level of representation that support the representation of women’s rationality in the film, through camera, lighting, sound system, and editing techniques. And then, at level of ideology, the result shows that the dominant ideology in Enola Holmes (2020) film is patriarchal ideology, which followed by the rise of matriarchal ideology as a response of reaction to patriarchal ideology which restricts women in many fields. Patriarchal ideology is shown especially when oppression and discriminations are found towards women due to the domination of men. Women’s rationality is shown in the film as a form of resistance to patriarchal ideology and thus, is also related to liberal feminism which emphasizes the freedom of individual rights.
