This study examines dajare, which is a funny word play in Japanese. The
objectives of this study are: 1. to describe the formation pattern of dajare that
appears in videos in the Japanese YouTube community; and 2. to describe the
language function contained in the contextual meaning of dajare that appears in
videos in the Japanese YouTube community. The dajare data used in this study was
taken from videos uploaded by Japanese YouTubers from 2018 to 2022.
The method used for data provision is simak method with the sadap
technique and the follow-up technique of catat. Then the data analysis method used
is the agih method with the Bagi Unsur Langsung (BUL) technique to analyze the
information of dajare and the padan method to analyze the contextual meaning of
a dajare. The presentation of the analysis results is presented in a written report.
Based on the analysis of 36 dajare data, nine types of dajare formation were
found, namely : homophony, mora addition, mora omission, mora transformation,
mora metathesis, kanji readings change, division, riddles, and mix of language.
Two types of new dajare were also found, namely, vowel mora into consonant mora
transformation and mixed mora addition. The language functions found after
analyzing the contextual meaning contained in dajare are informative, aesthetic,
expressive, vocative, and phatic.
