This research examines the ego defense mechanisms applied by the main character named Arisu. Arisu had a bad incident with his two friends in Borderland that made him anxious. This study uses a material object in the form of the first series of Alice in Borderland which released on December 10, 2020, and the formal object is ego defense mechanisms. This study aims to reveal the forms of ego defense mechanisms by Arisu and how the efforts of Arisu to finish the games. This research is included in the type of descriptive qualitative research. The method used in this research is the psychology of literature method using two auxiliary theories, namely the theory of narrative structure by Himawan Pratista and the theory of psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud.
This study describes the narrative structure in the form of the main elements of the narrative, the three-act structure, the narrative relationship with space, and the narrative relationship with time. Beside that, this study describes about the psychology of the main character, Arisu. Arisu applied ego defense mechanisms to protect himself from an anxiety that he had after a bad incident happened to him. Based on the results of the research that has been done, it shows that Arisu applies 6 types of ego defense mechanism in this first series of Alice in Borderland, such as repression, sublimation, rationalization, regression, aggression and apathy.
