Golden Kamuy is an anime series that tells the story of Sugimoto, a RussoJapanese war veteran who is in search for the Ainu gold treasure in order to pay for
the medical treatment of his childhood friend’s spouse. In his journey, Sugimoto
competes with The Imperial Japanese Army 7th Division and Hijikata Toshizou’s
accomplices, fighting over hints towards the Ainu gold treasure.
The purpose of this research is to explain the narrative elements and historical
reflections of the Meiji period in the Golden Kamuy anime series. Theories applied in
this research are the narrative structure theory by Himawan Pratista to analyze the
narrative structures, and the first perspective of Alan Swingewood’s period reflection
theory to analyze the historical elements that are reflected in the Golden Kamuy anime
series. The results of the research indicates reflections towards the history of the lives
of Japanese citizen and the Japanese military during the Meiji period.
