Abstract

Lasem Chinatown has unique form and space that are rarely found in other
Chinatowns. The survival phenomenon of the Lasem Chinatown Area was chosen as
the focus of the study for several reasons: 1) The site of a large residential area that
is different from other Chinatown areas; 2) Chinatown area is quite old; 3) The specific
spatial pattern of Lasem Chinatown; 4) Chinatown area dominates the entire city (five
villages out of eight villages in the Lasem sub-district city are Chinatown areas). The
uniqueness of the Lasem Chinatown in which humans survive to occupy it indicates
the existence and attachment of the community to its place of residence. This is
evidenced by the persistence of social and cultural activities that are still being the
characteristics of Lasem Chinatown. The research question is: What is the meaning
that is built in the survival phenomenon of form, space and function of Lasem
Chinatown Area that is unique and specific? The purpose of The Survival of Form,
Space and Function of Lasem Chinatown research is: Understanding the meaning that
is built in the survival of form and space of Lasem Chinatown Area that is unique and
specific. Research on the Collective Consciousness in Caring for Chinatown Area
Space in The Old City of Lasem uses a naturalistic qualitative research paradigm with
a phenomenological approach and inductive method. The analysis process is based
on observation units that produce units of information that are arranged into overall 15
themes in spatial contexts in the Lasem Chinatown. From the 15 regional spatial
themes, they were further grouped into major themes based on the characteristics and
uniqueness of each and four unique concepts were obtained, namely the concept of
preservation space, the concept of tolerance space, the concept of adaptation space
and the concept of livelihood space. Research on the Collective Consciousness in
Caring of Chinatown Space in the Old City of Lasem produced the Theory of
Sustainability and Change Based on Collective Consciousness which strengthens the
theory of place in urban planning and design and strengthens the theory of resilience,
adaptation and transformation. Research findings “Theory of Sustainability and
Change based on Collective Consciousness” are in line with the UNESCO concept
where the preservation of historic cities from various parts of the world must be
packaged in the context of the historic urban landscape.
