Abstract

ABSTRACT
Isnayani, Ulfa Mutiara. 2022. Psychosocial Development’s Stages of Ariel in
Mari Okada’s Maquia. Japanese Language and Culture Study Program,
Diponegoro University. Undergraduate thesis.
This research aims to explain narrative structues and stages of self
development of character Ariel from anime Maquia. Researcher uses
psychological approach to analyze problems arise. Narrative theory uses to
analyze narrative’s aspects in anime Maquia, while psychosocial theory uses to
analyze self development stages’ of character Ariel.
This research is a literature study. The material object used in this research is
the anime Maquia by Mari Okada. The formal objects used in this research are
film narrative theory by Himawan Pratista and the theory of stages of
psychosocial development by Erik Erikson.
The analysis explains that there are narrative elements in the anime Maquia
such as story and plot, narrative connection with space, narrative connection with
time, and limitation of story information . Researcher uses three-act structure to
analyze the story and plot. Elements of the narrative connection with space,
researcher founds 5 places used in anime Maquia. In the elements of narrative
connection with time, researcher analyze three aspects of time, there are time
sequence, time duration, and time frequency. Limitation of story information in
anime Maquia uses omniscient narration techniques.
Researcher discover that Ariel succeed going through eight stages of
self-development according to Erik Erikson. The analysis result concluded that
Ariel successfully reached the integrity stages of self-development because he has
successfully gone through all stages of self-development with positive results.
