Abstract

This study aims to explain the phenomenon of the role of the kyai in the
village head elections in Besito Village in 2019. The studies on the role of the
kyai that have been carried out are dominated by contestations for presidential
elections, legislative, central and regional elections. Meanwhile, the village head
election has not been studied much.
This research uses a case study approach in Besito Village. To analyze it,
this study uses sociometric theory in social relations. This study used a qualitative
descriptive method with data collection techniques carried out through interviews,
observation, and documentation.
The results of this study indicate that the Islamic religious leaders (kyai) of
Besito village as the main figures in this study played their role in political
contestation, namely the election of the village head in 2019. The role of the kyai
in the village who are actively involved has the effect of splitting the votes of
elements of the village community. In addition, other factors supporting the
division of votes in society are issues of what happened just before the 2019
Besito village head election and the implications that occurred in society due to
the splitting of the kyai's votes.
This research concludes that the role of the kyai has a major influence on
the continuity of the pilkades in Besito Village in 2019 and the issues that occur
include differences in interests that are equally strong between supporters, the use
of issues that discredit other village head candidates, and excessive mass
mobilization. From this, a division of votes was created just before the election for
the village head and when the situation was getting chaotic and heated, and the
role of the kyai who did not participate (neutral kyai) in political contestation as
social control in village communities was needed so that harmony between
villagers was maintained intact. .
