The data were collected and classified. The collected data were then analyzed and examined using the case study method. Modernization theory is used to analyze the problem of changing the conception of the father's role in raising children in Japanese families which is then strengthened by the emergence of the ikumen phenomenon.
The results showed that the conception of fatherhood changed in the early Heisei era from absentee fathers to fathers who were more active with their families. There are also challenges that arose such as the perception of masculinity that is still strong in Japanese society and paternity harassment.
Keywords: gender role change; fatherhood; Japanese family; ikumen.
